Think Don't Drink

Unpopular Opinion: I cannot fathom the idea of drinking wine or anything alcohol base when and if I get pregnant. If you are expecting and a glass of wine sounds appealing remember your child is always growing. You are hurting your child for your selfish act, and I feel like if you chose a sip of alcohol over your baby then you are an unfit mother. I am seriously in rage to know some people are living with this syndrome, something that can be completely prevented due to a selfish mother.

Ok, now on to the actual post that I meant to write.

What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is caused when high level of alcohols was consumed by the mother during pregnancy. This causes the fetus to develop in odd patterns of mental and physical ways -  affecting his or her entire life. In the United States alone 1 in every 750 infants is born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

What are the symptoms? Before I go any further, some of these physical attributes doesn’t necessary mean they have it, other things could’ve happened. DON’T POINT FINGERS AND SCOWL THE MOTHER. Just to name a few here are some:

Physical:

  • smaller eye openings
  • flattened cheekbones
  • short nose
  • thin upper lip
  • undeveloped jaw
Mental:
  • poor coordination
  • poor socialization skills
  • lack of imagination or curiosity
  • behavioral problems
When they are born they tend to be low birth weight as well as have a small head not to mention have organ dysfunction. Here is a picture of things to look at.

not much of an educational video, but I commend this woman for adopting a child with FAS.

  1. Great post Bri the video was very touching, that mom that adopted that child with FAS really has my respect. I don't know why women drink when they are pregnant, it clearly shows that those types of women are not responsible or mature enough to place the need of an unborn child before there own, it also how selfish those people can be.

  2. Looking at your lists of symptoms it comes to mind that if you go to lower income districts, where people are either ignorant of the effects of drinking whilst pregnant or simply don't care, is more prominent than in higher income and education communities.

  3. Very informative, i too can not understand what these future mothers are thinking when they so cheerfully take that alcoholic beverage into their hands then straight to their mouth. But putting what i feel or how i feel about expecting mothers drinking, we would have to look at the whole picture; what is socioeconomic status of this expecting mother.

  4. For some women it's a choice for others it takes will power! If they are making the decision to have the baby, their needs and wants no longer come first. I have heard and read that drinking red wine is recommended for calming nerves and relaxing pregnant women. But of course at moderated consumption. It's a controversial platform between those who believe it's too harmful for the fetus and those who have had done studies and seen no consequences. At end the bad weights over the good when it comes to drinking while women are pregnant.

  5. Yes, it is upsetting when women are pregnant and still want to consume alcohol knowing they could affect their baby. It is irresponsible how children are born with defects when they can be avoided when caused by the consumption of alcohol. Even though women know how they affect their growing baby by drinking alcohol, they are just being selfish in thinking about themselves. FAS is a very serious topic that should be taken in consideration when women are pregnant. It is the life of an innocent person who cannot protect themselves from danger.
